Family Support Programs

NCS has a number of programs for families and relatives, residing in Canberra’s Inner North. Programs range from single day workshops to ongoing social support groups.

We are always keen to develop new programs in consultation with our community, so if you have any ideas for a new program please give the team a call on 02 6163 0431.

Here is a taste of some of the programs running this year through the youth and Family Services Department.

Majura Playgroup
The Majura Playgroup is a supported playgroup for families residing in the Inner North of Canberra. The playgroup has a structured program of activities which is developed by the participants at the beginning of each term. The playgroup is aimed at reducing the socially isolation of vulnerable families, however all families are welcome to attend.

Tuck In 
The Tuck In Program was developed in consultation with parents and care givers who wanted to play a more active role in their child’s schooling but were not quite sure how to go about it. Sometimes all it takes is a deep breath and some good company to do it with you.

Lock In The Learning
Lock in The Learning is aimed assisting low income families in need of emergency child care to access free and subsidized childcare places quickly. The program supports parents or caregivers who need childcare to attend appointments, case conferences, health respite, training or employment. Places are available on a needs basis and all information is treated with confidentiality. For further details

Surviving Primary
Surviving Primary is an outreach program run in partnership with the local primary schools and the ACT Govt .“Schools as Communities” program. Our Family Support Worker provides weekly outreach support at various primary schools, in addition to delivering parenting programs addressing issues faced by parents with primary aged children.

KickStart Program
The KickStart program is The Hub’s holiday program for activities and outings is organized each holiday period indigenous families and relatives. A different set of and the race for places begins early. All children are welcome, however an adult must accompany them to all activities. Snack to School
If things are a little tight financially at the moment, the snack to school program may assist in a small way to alleviate some pressure, in addition to providing your children with some healthy food for school. The Youth and Family Services Team offers breakfast to children on their way to school in addition to recess snack packs to keep them going throughout the morning. We can also speak to the school on your behalf to organise lunch at the canteen for a short time.
