The Bike Library is a Northside Community Service initiative that falls under Northside’s *CHANGE program. It was established in 2019 and runs out of the bike shed at Margaret Hendry School in Taylor following a partnership between Northside Community Service, GIVIT and Margaret Hendry School to address accessibility issues in the Community. The Bike Library enables all community members to access bikes for recreation or transport.
The Bike Library operates just like a regular library, providing free, long-term access to second-hand bicycles, helmets and locks to any adult or child requiring a bike. Reconditioned, preloved bicycles are donated to the library through our partner GIVIT or by members of the community. Those bikes are refurbished by volunteer bike mechanics who work in the shed a few times a week and are then made available to community members upon request. Loans are available for up to six months with extensions available upon request.
As well as facilitating access to bikes, the Bike Library equips the community with the skills, knowledge and resources to get the most from them. We run extremely popular ‘Fix n Ride’ and ‘Learn to Ride’sessions which empowers community members to learn new skills, feel safe and in control while riding or fixing their own bikes. *The initiative is possible because of the funding provided by the ACT Health Directorate Health Promotions Grant.
