Balance the Scales CBR

A citywide call for Canberrans to share what real fairness for women looks like through an interactive audio installation for International Women’s Day.

Balance the Scales CBR

We’re bringing a question to Canberra: what does fairness for women really look like?

From 2–4 March 2026, we are installing interactive phones at ACT Libraries in Woden and Dickson as part of our International Women’s Day campaign, Balance the Scales CBR.

Anyone visiting the libraries during this time can pick up the handset and record their answer to one question: “What’s one thing that would make your everyday life more equal?”

This campaign responds to what we see every day in our communities. In the ACT, approximately 60% of people seeking homelessness support are women. Nationally, older women represent the fastest-growing demographic experiencing housing insecurity. Single mothers and women on low incomes face heightened food stress, while women continue to perform the majority of unpaid care work, limiting their economic independence and long-term financial security.

These aren’t abstract statistics. They are the lived experiences of women who walk through our doors every day.

All recorded messages will be compiled into a community audio piece, shared on International Women’s Day, Sunday 8 March, capturing diverse Canberra voices on equity, opportunity, and the structural barriers women continue to face.

Visit Woden Library or Dickson Library between Monday, 2 March and Wednesday, 4 March 2026 and add your voice.

Can’t make it in person? Follow the conversation at #BalanceTheScalesCBR and share your answer online.

This campaign aligns with the United Nations’ 2026 International Women’s Day theme, Balance the Scales, bringing a global conversation about gender equity into our local community.
