Conscious Discipline in Action: Supporting Social and Emotional Learning in Northside Classrooms

At Northside, we know that learning isn’t just about letters and numbers, it’s about relationships, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. That’s why our educators continue to embed the principles of Conscious Discipline across all aspects of our teaching and care.

Conscious Discipline is not just a behaviour management tool, it’s a research-based, trauma-informed approach that supports children (and adults) in developing self-regulation, empathy, and connection. It empowers us to create safe, supportive environments where children can thrive socially and emotionally, while educators lead with calmness, clarity, and compassion.

One quote that continues to inspire our work comes from Dr. Becky A. Bailey, the founder of Conscious Discipline:

“Conscious Discipline provides us with a wise path to follow so we can discipline ourselves well enough to meet our goals. When we find ourselves off course, it empowers us with the conscious awareness that we have lost our way. It then gives us the skills to refocus, get back on our path and achieve our desired goals.”

This quote speaks deeply to our daily experience as educators and teachers. We know that young children are still developing the skills to manage big feelings, communicate their needs, and solve problems peacefully. But we also know that adults need these tools just as much, especially when challenges arise.

What Conscious Discipline Looks Like in Our Classrooms

In our learning environments, you’ll see Conscious Discipline practices woven through everyday routines. Educators model calm breathing, offer two positive choices to support autonomy, and help children name and manage their emotions using visuals and co-regulation strategies. We don’t just teach children what to do, we show them how to do it, step by step using noticing and the language of safety.

You might notice our “Safe Place” corners, where children can go when they need a moment to breathe, reflect, or calm down. Or you might hear children using languages like “I’m sad,” or “I need space,” a clear sign that they’re building emotional vocabulary and learning how to express themselves respectfully.

We also use tools like the “Brain Smart Start” to begin our day with connection, movement, commitment and intention which helps everyone in the room feel seen, safe, and ready to learn.

Conscious Discipline

Why It Matters

When children feel safe and connected, their brains are better able to learn, grow, and make good choices. Conscious Discipline helps us create a culture where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, and where both children and adults are supported in becoming more aware, intentional, and kind.

Apart from helping in the moment to resolve conflicts or regulate big emotions, these practices also lay the foundation for life-long social and emotional skills. These support our educators, too by offering a consistent framework for staying calm, responding rather than reacting, and building stronger relationships with children and families.

A Continuing Journey

Embedding Conscious Discipline is an ongoing journey, not a one-time training. Our educators attended years of workshops, learning circles and professional development trainings with the child psychologist, Beth Macgregor. Through these, they learned the skills and powers of Conscious Discipline to become brilliant brain builders and be able to pass this brilliance to children. They continue to reflect on their own emotional responses, model healthy regulation, and seek out professional learning to deepen their practice.

We are proud of the way our team walks alongside children every day as they teach them what to do, and show them how to be.

Together, we are growing classrooms for children that are places of learning, belonging, connection, and care.

Our Children’s Services are very popular within the community so to ensure everyone can express their interest in our services we have created the Early Childhood Waiting List.
